Concept

Camelion is a Modular Replacement Scrubber (MRC). It is not a complete rebreather but a combination of a separate scrubber and electronics chamber that can be turned into a rebreather by using standard rebreather spare parts. Due to its availablity and its quality standards, we have chosen to finish our test units with AP spare parts.

Below are some of the issues that have influenced the concept and the design of Camelion:

  • Moist and electronics don’t go along very well and most rebreather divers will acknowledge this. However, most rebreathers still have the oxygen cells, the batteries and the connectors in the loop, causing corrosion and false cell readings. Therefore Camelion needed a separate (but ambient) electronics chamber that keeps the cells, the connectors and the batteries dry.
  • After a dive it’s advisable to leave the cells to dry, which often implies that the scrubber has to be removed and stored away to prevent the scrubber material from drying out. When the scrubber needs a refill, most heads (containing the cells) have to be removed. Therefore Camelion has completely separated electronics and scrubber chambers, making it possible to remove the cell holder without ‘disturbing’ the scrubber. When removing the scrubber for a refill, the electronics chamber stays in place.
  • Most rebreathers can house only 3 (or 4) cells. Adding an extra cell often takes expensive adapters and extra wiring. Camelion can house up to 5 cells without the need of extra adapters or wiring.
  • ‘Field serviceable’ is an expression that doesn’t always go along with many rebreathers. Especially when traveling or when diving on a cruise, having a truly field serviceable rig is of great importance. Camelion is equipped with a highly accessible electronic chamber that allows the replacement of cells, solenoid and batteries in minutes, without interfering with the rest of the unit and without the need of special tools.
  • With nowadays supply of rebreather controllers, computers and monitoring devices, being able to install the device(s) of ones choice is highly appreciated but is often very limited and in most cases requires modifications to the unit. Camelion can be equipped with up to three different controller and/or monitoring devices that can be installed, changed or switched without any modification to the unit.
  • When disassembled, Camelion hardly takes up the maximum space allowed for aircraft hand luggage.
